Health Minister clarifies concerns about prenatal vitamins

Health Minister Lloyd Matthews today clarified media reports regarding coverage of prenatal vitamin supplements for social services recipients. "Contrary to some reports, maternity vitamins remain available for pregnant women on social assistance. The only change we have made concerns individuals, other than pregnant women, who were taking the drugs as a multivitamin supplement. There have been no changes for pregnant women."

The minister added the Department of Health is an advocate for improving prenatal care. "We have always supported and developed programs that promote maximum health benefits for pregnant women. Providing a high level of service to pregnant women has always been a priority of government and it will continue to be a priority."

The minister said the situation would be clarified for pharmacies and physicians today. "We regret that the issue was misinterpreted and we are working to clarify any confusion this may have caused."
