Mental health crisis centre to open April 1

A new mental health crisis centre will open its doors April 1, Health Minister Lloyd Matthews announced today. "The centre will enhance mental health services in the St. John's area by providing 24 hour a day, seven days a week counselling services."

The centre will be staffed by nurses, social workers and volunteers who will provide crisis counselling services to individuals who have an urgent need. A telephone crisis line will also be established at the centre.

"The centre will provide both crisis intervention as well as provide links to other mental health services available in the community," said the minister. "While the centre fulfills an immediate need, it will also provide access to treatment services for those with mental health problems."

"There have been concerns raised that gaps exist in mental health services. The Department of Health, along with various agencies and organizations, have worked to address any gaps in service delivery," said Mr. Matthews. "I am very pleased that we were able to begin to address some of these concerns with the establishment of this crisis centre."

The Mental Health Crisis Centre is an 18 month pilot project jointly funded by the Department of Health, Community Health - St. John's Region and by the Health Care Corporation of St. John's.
