Improved Driver Examination Services for Residents of Coastal Labrador

Wally Andersen, MHA - Torngat Mountains, said today that he has been advised by Ernest McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands and Minister Responsible for Labrador, that improved driver examination services have been put in place for residents of coastal Labrador.

Airstrip operators with the Department of Works, Services and Transportation stationed along the Labrador coast have now been trained to provide these services. Previously residents were served on an irregular and infrequent basis by driver examination staff travelling from Goose Bay. Written tests, road tests, and driver photos will now be offered at the airstrip building according to a locally posted schedule.

Communities included in this new initiative are Mary's Harbour, St. Lewis, William's Harbour, Port Hope Simpson, Charlottetown, Black Tickle, Cartwright, Rigolet, Makkovik, Postville, Hopedale and Nain.

Mr. Andersen said: "I would like to acknowledge the cooperation of Julie Bettney, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, and her staff. This is an example of how cooperation between two government departments can result in improved services without the need for additional resources."

The Government Services Branch of the Department of Government Services and Lands will continue to explore innovative measures to improve delivery of services to residents of this province
