Roadcheck 96, June 4-6

Backgrounder

  • Roadcheck 96 is a continuation of a joint international commercial motor vehicle safety check that began in 1987.
  • This annual effort involves the cooperation of officials in conducting simultaneous vehicle and driver inspection activities at various locations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
  • The activities are organized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), an organization composed of representatives of most states and provinces that established common practices and procedures for commercial vehicle safety enforcement. Newfoundland is an active member.
  • Newfoundland's involvement in Roadcheck 96 is indicative of our continuous effort towards maintaining safer highways for commercial motor vehicle drivers and motorists.
  • Newfoundland's participation consists of a three-day effort at three inspection sites across the island: Foxtrap, Grand Falls-Windsor and Port aux Basques.
  • This year's team will consist of 12 highway enforcement officers, one federal transportation of dangerous goods inspector and several representatives of the RCMP.
  • The results will be compiled on an international basis and will be released at a later date.
  • We welcome industry to visit an inspection site during Roadcheck 96 and observe CVSA inspection first hand.
