Sale of lands acquired from Corner Brook Pulp and Paper The provincial government is now accepting applications for the public acquisition of lands in central and western areas of the island portion of the province that were acquired in 1994 from the Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Limited. The announcement was made today by Ernest McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands. The land comprises an area of approximately 616,000 hectares, 80 per cent of which is located in western portion of the island, the remaining 20 per cent is located in Central Newfoundland. Applications for lands will be received and processed on a first come, first served basis. All applications received will be subject to review by various government departments. When no land use conflicts are identified and the proposed development meets health and environment standards, approval will be granted. As is the normal case with all Crown land dispositions, applicants will initially be issued a lease or a licence to develop the site. Once development on leased property is completed, the applicant may be entitled to apply for freehold ownership. Government imposed a freeze on the acceptance of applications for these lands at the time of the purchase. "This freeze was imposed to allow government sufficient time to analyze the capabilities of the lands and to put the necessary administrative mechanism in place to deal with ownership issues, " said the minister. The minister went on to explain that applications would not yet be accepted for cottage/residential sites for a number of "high demand" areas throughout the holdings. These areas, which have been identified by the department, will be subject to detailed planning. As the individual plans are finalized, the availability of lots will be advertised to the public at large. The following is a listing of the "high demand" areas in central and western portions of the province.
