Silviculture project in Gander District

Ms. Sandra Kelly, MHA for Gander District, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods are pleased to announce the award of a contract to carry out silviculture work near Joe Batt's Pond. The value of the contract is $26,086.

"This work represents government's commitment to a sustainable forest by bringing a non-regenerating cutover back into production," said Ms. Kelly. Mr. Tulk added: "Stewardship and maintenance of our forests is a long term investment in the future of the forest industry."

The contract was awarded to Budland Enterprises Limited of Baytona to plant bareroot seedlings in a 100 hectare cutover area near Joe Batts Pond. The species planted will be matched to specific site conditions to maximize regeneration success. The 100 hectare cutover area was generated by Stuckless Forest Products.

The projects is expected to be underway by early September and completed by early October 1996. Approximately 15 people will be employed during this four week period.
