Firearms Safety/Hunter Education Course

Beaton Tulk, minister responsible for wildlife, wishes to remind hunters of the new Firearm Safety/Hunter Education Course ongoing at public colleges throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. "The 15 hour course is required this fall on the island by all new big and small game hunters and those hunters who have not previously completed a recognized firearms training program." said the minister. "I would like to encourage new hunters to register for a course as early as possible if they wish to hunt small game or migratory game birds this fall." The minister stressed that hunters who have completed the former Hunter Capability Testing Program or the Canadian Firearms Safety Course before April of 1996 are not required to do any further training.

Labrador hunters without previous training will be required to complete the new course before the fall of 1997. While the course is presently available in Labrador, due to the geographical distinction of the Labrador region plus the social and cultural considerations associated with Labrador native groups, the department will need time to work closely with the Labrador public college and other interest groups to ensure that the new course is readily accessible in all areas of Labrador.

As another important reminder to hunters, beginning this hunting season, hunters on the island will be required to possess an Outdoor Identification Card along with the appropriate hunting licence while hunting game with firearms. This card is issued to both the persons who have previously completed the Hunter Capability Test or the Canadian Firearm Safety Course, and participants in the new Firearm Safety/ Hunter Education Course.

Since the program began this past April, over 150 courses have been completed, with close to 1,700 participants. The minister stated: "I would like to commend those involved in the program delivery, including the public college staff and in particular the individual course instructors, on their efforts in the field of hunter education. Their dedication and commitment will ensure the hunters of this province carry out their activities in a safe, knowledgable and responsible manner."

The minister confirmed that hunters can expect to see the 1996/97 Hunting Guide within the next few weeks. All hunters are encouraged to read the guide prior to the beginning of the 1996/97 hunting season. Contact: John Blake or Chris Baldwin, (709) 729-3509.
