Silvicultural project awarded in Lewisporte

Melvin Penney, MHA - Lewisporte, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, are pleased to announce the award of a contract for silvicultural work in the Loon Bay/Michaels Harbour area.

A $50,100 contract was awarded to Campbellton Wood Harvesters of Campbellton to undertake pre-commercial thinning work for an area of 100 hectares.

"This work is required to thin overstocked balsam fir and black spruce stands. By selectively thinning the trees to a density of 2,500 stems per hectare, the remaining trees will have better access to light and nutrients, therefore growth will be concentrated on the remaining crop trees to increase yield and reduce rotation age," said Mr. Penney.

Approximately 12 to 15 people will be employed for approximately seven weeks. The project will be under way by the end of July, and will conclude late September 1996.
