Silvicultural project awarded in St. George's/Stephenville East District

Kevin Aylward, MHA - St. George's/Stephenville East, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, are pleased to announce the award of a contract for silvicultural work in the Fox Island River area.

A $50,116 contract was awarded to Three Rivers Silviculture Ltd. of Cartyville to undertake this pre-commercial thinning work over an area of 67 hectares.

"This work is required to thin overstocked young stands. By selectively thinning the trees, the remaining trees will have better access to light and nutrients, therefore growth will be conctentrated on the remaining crop trees to increase yield and reduce rotation age," said Mr. Aylward.

Ten people will be employed for approximately six weeks. The project will be under way by the end of July, and will conclude late August 1996.
