Silvicultural project awarded in St. George's/Stephenville East

Kevin Aylward, MHA - St. George's/Stephenville, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, are pleased to announce the award of a contract for silvicultural work in the Little Crabbes River area.

A $60,800 contract was awarded to Western Forest Services Ltd. of Mount Moriah to undertake this stand reclamation (clearing) work over an area of 100 hectares.

"This is the first phase of a forest improvement project to restore a 100 hectare site with a vigorous healthy forest by clearing trees which are infested with aphids," said Mr. Aylward. All merchantable and non-merchantable aphid infested timber will cleared and as much as possible will be salvaged for commercial use.

Fifteen people will be employed for approximately 12 weeks. The project will be underway in mid July, and will conclude mid October 1996.
