Silviculture project awarded in St. George's/Stephenville East

Kevin Aylward, MHA - St. George's/Stephenville East, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, are pleased to announce the award of a contract for silvicultural work in the Barachois Brook/Main Gut area.

A $60,300 contract was awarded to Western Forest Services Ltd. of Mount Moriah to undertake this stand reclamation (clearing) work over an area of 75 hectares.

"This project involves completion of the first phase of a site rehabilitation project to restore the site with a vigorous healthy forest by clearing trees which are infested with aphids," said Mr. Aylward. All merchantable and non-merchantable aphid infested timber will be cleared and as much as possible will be salvaged for commercial use.

Twelve people will be employed for approximately 12 weeks. The project will be under way in early July, and will conclude early October 1996.
