Silvicultural contract awarded in Windsor/Springdale

Graham Flight, MHA - Windsor/Springdale, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today the allocation of $43,125 for a forest improvement contract for Hall's Bay South.

The contract was awarded to Samson Holding of Harbour Breton. The pre-commercial thinning will be done over a 75 hectare area in Hall's Bay South.

This project will involve thinning overly young stands. Thinning reduces the number of trees per hectare, giving the trees more space to grow. "This work will ultimately speed up the growth process, and reduce rotation age from the point of view of commercial harvesting," commented Mr. Flight. The minister added: "In addition, this work will allow for other species to grow in the forest providing a better balance to the ecosystem."

The project is expected to employ 12 people. Work will commence early July and will extend over approximately eight weeks until early September.

The project is fully funded by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods.
