Silviculture project awarded in St. Barbe District Chuck Furey, MHA - St. Barbe, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, are pleased to announce the award of a contract for pre-commercial thinning in the St. Barbe District. "This project involves the thinning of overstocked young stands to concentrate growth on the remaining stems," said Mr. Furey. The minister added: "This reduces competition for light, moisture and nutrients, and allows for increased yield and reduced rotation periods between crops." A $51,797 contract was awarded to Western Forest Services Ltd. of Mount Moriah to undertake this work. The project involves 100 hectares in the Eastern Blue Pond area. Twelve people will be employed for approximately eight weeks. The project will be under way in early July, and will conclude early September 1996. Contact: Anna Buffinga, (709) 729-3750.
