Silviculture project in Exploits District Roger Grimes, MHA - Exploit's, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, are pleased to announce the award of a $46,875.50 contract to carry out a silviculture project at Birchy Bay in the Exploit's district. Samson Holding of Harbour Breton was awarded the contract for the thinning of 100 hectares of natural regeneration forest at Birchy Bay. The objective of the project is to space dense balsam fir and black spruce stands to approximately 2,500 stems per hectare. "This will improve the overall health and viability of these stands." said Mr. Grimes. The area was previously harvested for pulpwood and sawlogs, and then cleared to enhance natural regeneration. "Selective thinning is a standard silvicultural practise that reduces the competition between seedlings," added Mr. Tulk. "This investment will enhance the overall health of the forest." Mr. Tulk says the project will get under way by the end of June, and will involve a total of six weeks of activity. Eighteen people are expected to be employed.
