Silviculture project in Bonavista North District

Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, is pleased to announce the award of a contract to carry out silviculture work in the Ragged Harbour River area. "Clearing saws will be used to thin a 50 hectare section of the 1961 forest fire area which has regenerated naturally," said the minister. "Particular attention will be paid to ensure that adequate buffers are maintained along the Ragged Harbour River."

This work will reduce stand density to approximately 2,500 crop trees per hectare. This thinning process will allow the forest to produce larger dimension timber over a shorter rotation period. This, in turn, enhances sawlog production. "This work represents government's commitment to a sustainable forest," Mr. Tulk said. " Stewardship and maintenance of our forests is an investment both in the future of the forest industry and for the people of Bonavista North."

A $25,500 contract was awarded to Campbellton Wood Harvesters Ltd. of Campbellton for thinning of this 50 hectare area.

The project will employ 10 people for about six weeks. Work is expected to get under way in late June 1996.
