Forest Service undertakes silvicultural work in Avalon District

Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today the allocation of $36,500 for "hands on" precommercial thinning work in various locations of the Avalon, such as Ferryland, Harbour Main, Trinity-Bay de Verde.

This project will involve thinning overly dense balsam fir regeneration. Thinning reduces the number of trees per hectare, giving the trees more space to grow. "This work will ultimately speed up the growth process, and future harvesting cycle," commented the minister. "In addition, this will allow for other species to grow in the forest providing a better balance to the ecosystem."

The project is expected to employ two people. This is a Forest Service project, therefore the workers will consist of recalled government employees. Work will commence early June and will extend over 24 weeks until the end of November.

The project is fully funded by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods.
