Forest Service undertakes silvicultural work in Swanger Cove, Bay d'Espoir area Oliver Langdon, MHA - Fortune Bay-Cape LeHune, and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today the allocation of $150,000 for "hands on" precommercial thinning work in Swanger Cove in the Bay d'Espoir area. This area was clearcut in the early 1980s, it naturally regenerated as a very dense forest. This thinning project will reduce the number of trees per hectare, giving the trees more space to grow. "This work will ultimately speed up the growth process, and future harvesting cycle." said Mr. Langdon. Mr Tulk said: "In addition, this will allow for other species to grow in the forest providing a better balance to the ecosystem." The project is expected to employ 30 people. This is a Forest Service project, therefore the workers will consist of recalled government employees. Work will commence early June and will take approximately eight weeks. The project is fully funded by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods.
