Wooddale Tree Nursery back in full gear for 1996
The Wooddale Nursery produces approximately seven million tree seedlings annually, and to date has shipped 61 million containerized (greenhouse) seedlings and 35 million bareroot (field) seedlings across the island. At the state-of-the-art facility, greenhouse grown seedlings are ready for planting at age six to 13 months depending on the species and sowing schedule. Bareroot seedlings, destined for sites with high competition levels, spend three to four years in outdoor nursery beds before being shipped. The seasonal staff will be involved in thinning and transplanting the recently sown March container crop which will ensure maximum utilization of greenhouse space. Another spring activity will include transplanting of bareroot seedlings to provide them with more growing space so that they will be large enough to be shipped this fall. Watering and fertilizing crops, weeding, harvesting peat moss, delivering seedlings, and caring for the seed orchards will keep nursery staff busy throughout the summer months. The minister is pleased with the continued work at the Wooddale Nursery in keeping pace with the latest developments in technology and cultural treatments to ensure that quality seedlings are produced cost effectively. The minister said: "This work is vital to ensure a viable forest resource for the future."
