Annual review of processing
and marketing programs of Representatives of more than 20 fish processing companies from around the province will be in St. John's on Thursday (April 25) for an annual review of the processing and marketing programs of the Canada- Newfoundland Agreement for Fishing Industry Development (CAFID). They will be joined by other fishing industry representatives and government officials for a full day of presentations on ongoing initiatives, as well as those completed, with the assistance of funding from the $6.5 million agreement. Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister John Efford will be the luncheon speaker. The annual review is organized by the CAFID Coordinating Committee headed by John Mercer (federal) and John Hodder (provincial). A review of projects funded for the harvesting sector was held earlier this year in Gander. Ninety-five applications for CAFID-funded initiatives have been approved to date, for a total of $2.7 million in contributions to the industry. This has made possible developmental work aimed at diversifying the fishery. For example, one company installed a rock and toad crab processing line, resulting in 100 new jobs in processing activity in 1995, increased income to fish harvesters, and an extended operating season in both the processing and harvesting sectors. This was done by using a resource that had previously been discarded. The primary objective of CAFID is to provide a framework within which the Newfoundland fishing industry can be self-sustaining and economically viable in a resource-short environment. CAFID, cost-shared 70-30 by the federal and provincial governments respectively, funds industry-led pilot projects that focus on new harvesting and processing technology, test fisheries and commercial surveys, and market development. It also identifies and quantifies opportunities, and includes flexibility for government initiatives that meet program objectives.
