Details of the Canada Pension Plan's Public Consultation Process in Newfoundland and Labrador

Chair of Newfoundland and Labrador's Canada Pension Plan Consultation Process and Legislative Assistant to the Minister of Finance, Jim Walsh, today announced the details of the Canada Pension Plan's Public Consultation Process in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A panel consisting of federal and provincial government representatives are holding public consultation sessions across Canada until the end of May to obtain input on the Canada Pension Plan from Canadian citizens country-wide. The process was launched on Monday, April 15 with the first of the sessions being held in Toronto.

"We are pleased to be a part of this federal-provincial initiative," said Mr. Walsh. "We are seeking the input of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians through both written submissions and presentations at the four consultation sessions we have scheduled. We have already sent copies of the consultation document to many interest groups and business organizations around the province seeking their input. However we want to hear from everybody, so please feel free to contact us or the Consultations Secretariat in Ottawa."

The consultation document released by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Governments of Canada is entitled An Information Paper for Consultations on the Canada Pension Plan. The document addresses public concern about the sustainability of the CPP - concerns shared by provincial and federal governments. It also lays out choices for change that will form the basis for the consultation process.

"We have scheduled sessions in St. John's, Corner Brook, Gander and Happy Valley-Goose Bay," said Mr. Walsh. "We have a small team who will be joining the federal panel in St. John's and Corner Brook and my provincial representatives are looking forward to hearing from even more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in sessions in Gander and Happy Valley- Goose Bay."

The sessions are scheduled for May 14 in St. John's, May 15 in Corner Brook, May 16 in Gander and May 21 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. To schedule a presentation you can telephone the Department of Finance at (709) 729-5872.
