Premier calls for constructive dialogue with Labrador community leaders after positive meeting

Brian Tobin, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Ernest McLean, Minister Responsible for Labrador, had a "very positive meeting" today with 14 members of a visiting Coastal Labrador delegation, including Independent MHA Yvonne Jones. The delegates came from communities throughout the Labrador Straits and South Coast to speak to the Premier about issues that affect their areas, including the proposed Trans-Labrador Highway initiative and the location of the Voisey's Bay smelter.

"This was a very positive meeting", said the Premier. "I believe that it is the start of a new constructive dialogue between the government and local community leaders in Labrador. As I said to the delegation, 'it's far better that we speak across the table than across the Straits.'"

"I assured them that their communities will not be overlooked when the government makes decisions about the Labrador transportation network," said the Premier. "The government is steadfast that an all- weather Trans-Labrador Highway must link the South Coast and the Straits with Happy Vtalley-Goose Bay and Labrador West, and a quality ferry service must be maintained. But the province must also be given the resources by Ottawa to continue a quality service well into the future."

The Premier also told the group that he is committed to Labradorians getting primary benefits from their freshwater fisheries and outfitting operations.

"On that note, I told the delegation that the government will send a task force, endorsed by local community leaders in Labrador, to explore ways to develop Labrador's resources and maximize the benefits for those who live there."

The Premier told the group that the Voisey's Bay smelter and refinery location will be determined by the company, following careful study of economic, logistical, safety and environmental considerations. Although government has a direct interest in the results, it will play no part in the decision-making process. "INCO listened when we said that these facilities must be built within the province so that we may all benefit from the revenues, royalties and jobs. Wherever the smelter is located within the province, I am committed to making sure that Labradorians receive their fair share of these benefits."

"I am also committed that the INCO decision be a substantive and transparent one, so that all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians understand the basis of INCO's decision," added the Premier.

Over the next two days, five Cabinet Ministers will meet with the group on a variety of issues that affect their communities.

"These people have come a long way to see members of the government and other decision-makers, and I'm happy to meet with them," said the Premier.
