October 2, 1996 (Executive Council) Premier Brian Tobin paid tribute to the late Robert Bourassa who died earlier today in Montreal. "Robert Bourassa was a true statesman, a scholar and a visionary," said Premier Tobin. "He guided the government of Quebec as premier with insight and skill through difficult periods in the 70s, 80s and well into the 90s. Mr. Bourassa committed his efforts over these years to achieving growth and harmony in Quebec society," continued Premier Tobin. "Mr. Bourassa's great trait was his determination to refuse to choose between the love and passion he held for his province and his love and passion for his country. In that regard, he is a model for all premiers in Canada today. The strength and determination he showed during his illness was not unlike the strength and character he showed during his time in public service," said Premier Tobin. Premier Tobin was saddened by the news and passes on his deepest sympathy to Mr. Bourassa's family. For more information: Cathy Dornan, Office of the Premier, (709) 729-3564.
