Premier Tobin raises Labrador airport and highway with federal ministers in Ottawa

Premier Brian Tobin says the federal government needs to take another look at federal airport policy and possible impacts on Goose Bay. Mr. Tobin says planned changes to service in Goose Bay may put at risk the development of mineral resources in Labrador.

"We have a situation where DND and Transport Canada are pursuing policies independent of each other that may have the impact of leaving the airport at Goose Bay incapable of providing a safe and reliable environment at a time when traffic of all kinds is increasing dramatically," said Premier Tobin.

The premier will be meeting with Transport Minister David Anderson regarding Goose Bay airport and also on proposals for accelerating work on the Trans Labrador Highway. "We know there is no pot of money that will allow massive development of the Trans Labrador Highway. However I believe it is possible with a little cooperation to make significantly more progress than we have seen in recent years and at the same time to focus the dollars that might be available on some of the worst sections of the road."
