Premier Tobin comments on statement by Mobil Oil and Chevron Canada
regarding short list for trans-shipment terminal facility

Premier Brian Tobin welcomed a statement by Mobil Oil Canada and Chevron Canada Resources today that they had produced a short list of potential locations in Newfoundland where a trans-shipment terminal facility might be constructed. The three locations were selected after a rigorous review of the physical characteristics and weather patterns in several communities.

Premier Tobin said: "I am particularly concerned with ensuring that the site ultimately selected will allow for expansion to accommodate the development of other oil fields." It is believed that the existence of such facilities in this province will facilitate the growth of our emerging oil industry.

The premier also said: "We must take every opportunity to maximize the benefit for Newfoundland and Labrador from the development of our resources." This is expected to be a multi-million dollar project which will provide employment for the people of this province and will result in a signifcant net benefit to the Newfoundland and Labrador economy.

The premier is confident that trans-shipment will be an essential element of the transportation system, not only for Hibernia oil, but also for other fields expected to be developed following Hibernia.
