NOTE TO EDITORS:

Itinerary for Lieutenant Governor for May 4 and 5

On Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m., His Honour the Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Frederick W. Russell, and Mrs. Russell, will attend the annual reunion dinner and dance of the Naval Association of Newfoundland, Eastern Division, at Branch 56, Royal Canadian Legion. His Honor will propose a Toast to Absent Comrades and Her Honour will bring greeting on behalf of World War II service women.

On Sunday, May 5, at 11 a.m., Their Honours will attend The Battle of the Atlantic Church Service at St. Thomas' Anglican Church. At 12:30 p.m., His Honour will take the salute from the parade of naval veterans, the naval contingent of CFS St. John's, HMCS Cabot, RCSCC Terra Nova, RCSCC Marconi, NLCC Polynia and NLCC Fort Pepperell from the saluting base in front of the Court House on Water Street. Following the parade, His Honour will participate in the Naval Veteran's Wreath Laying Ceremony on the St. John's Harbour Apron.

The ceremony commemorates the role played by Canadian and Newfoundland sailors, airmen and women, and merchant mariners during the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II. The valiant efforts of these service personnel kept the sea lanes open for the transport of personnel and supplies which ultimately resulted in the Allied victory.
