March 22, 1996
(Executive Council)

The following statement was issued today by Premier Brian Tobin. It was also read in the House of Assembly:

Ministerial statement - Premier pays tribute to the late Katherine Murphy

May I ask members of the House to join with me in paying tribute to a Newfoundlander who rendered long and noteworthy service to our predecessors in the Assembly. I speak of Miss Katherine Murphy, who died a day or so ago.

Ms. Murphy, known as "Kit" to generations of parliamentarians, was the official stenographer (the only one!) for the House of Assembly from the mid-1950s to her retirement in 1975. None of us who sit in the House today were here then but she was as important and essential to the operation of the House as was the speaker himself. She sat with her stenotype machine just inside the Bar of the House, originally in the old chamber of the Colonial Building and later on the 10th floor of this building. She recorded the debates faithfully - too faithfully, sometimes, for members who misspoke themselves - and her transcription was word perfect.

Kit Murphy was universally liked; she always had a smile and a kind word for all. She lived a full and happy life and we mourn her passing. With leave of the House, I ask that the clerk be directed to send an appropriate letter of condolences to her family, to extend our sympathy to them and to mark her contribution to the work of the House of Assembly over her years of service to it.
