November 12, 1996 (Environment and Labour) Environment and Labour Minister Kevin Aylward has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies can be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item.
The proponent is proposing to develop an 18 hole secondary draw golf course situated on approximately 170 acres located near Richmond Hill Subdivision in St. John's. The proposed physical features of the undertaking include an access road, parking lots, clubhouse, maintenance building, 18 hole golf course, and driving range. It is anticipated that the construction of the golf course and facilities will commence in the spring of 1997 and take approximately two years to complete. The project was registered on November 5, 1996, and the minister's decision is due December 15, 1996.
The proponent proposes to construct and operate a grow-out facility for wild juvenile eels on private land in the community of Robinson's. A building 40 feet by 60 feet will be utilized for feed, supplies, equipment and storage purposes. The main plant, housing the recirculation system and juvenile eel stock, will measure approximately 68 feet by 120 feet. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin late this fall. The project was registered on November 7, 1996, and the minister's decision is due on December 20, 1996. The public is invited to examine these registration documents and offer written comments to the minister on whether an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) should be ordered. The deadline for the receipt of public comments is December 8, 1996.
The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertaking which has recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
