The following is being distributed at the request of the Human Rights Commission:

The Human Rights Commission met in its regular fall session on October 17 and 18 in St. John's. Thirteen individual cases were dealt with: seven were dismissed, three were withdrawn by the complainants, one was recommended for settlement, and two were deferred to a later date. The commission approved exemption under the code for a special program to be conducted at Queen Elizabeth Regional High School, Foxtrap, which would introduce young women to the possibility of careers in the construction industry.

The commission is very pleased with the response to its request in September for public input into the commission's review of the Human Rights Code. Twenty-eight individuals and organizations have indicated an interest in making submissions. The commission will be holding public hearings for the St. John's area on December 9 and 10, while hearings outside St. John's will be held at a later date. December 10 is International Human Rights Day.
