Environmental assessment bulletin released

Environment and Labour Minister Kevin Aylward has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies can be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED

  1.  
    • District 16 Upper Humber/Main River/
      Deer Lake/Hind Lakes Areas Five-year Forest Operating Plan
      Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Ltd.

    The proponent has submitted a five-year forest operating plan for District 16 Forest Management Unit. The plan describes proposed harvesting, silviculture, road construction and forest protection activities including environmental protection measures to be employed. The public have until August 9, 1996 to review the undertaking and make their comments known to the minister.

  2.  
    • Whitbourne Christmas Tree Farm
      Proponent: Christmas Trees by George

    The proponent wishes to establish a commercial Christmas tree farm on five hectares of land approximately one and a half kilometers southeast of Whitbourne. Access to the site will be via the abandoned railway bed. The public have until August 9, 1996 to review the undertaking and make their comments known to the minister.

WILDLIFE COMPONENT STUDY RE-SUBMITTED

  • Northwest Arm Brook (Connoire Bay) Small Hydro
    Environmental Impact Statement
    Proponent: St. Mary's Bay Hydro Corp.

The proponent has re-submitted a component study on Caribou to address additional information required for preparation of the environmental impact statement. The public have until August 5, 1996 to make their comments known to the minister.

NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED

The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertakings which have recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertakings are released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.

  • Wooddale Christmas Tree Farm
  • St. Paul's Golf Course

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
