News Conference to Launch Environment Week

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Environment and Labour, will hold a news conference to kick off Environment Week, on Monday, June 3, 1996 at 10 a.m. in the Executive Boardroom, Confederation Building, West Block.

Environment Week, which takes place from June 2-8, is a national event during which people from all over the country and the province get involved in environmentally-positive activities and bring a focus to environmental issues.

At the news conference, Mr. Aylward will proclaim the week and launch a new environmental educational program that has been developed over the past year by the four Atlantic provinces. The new program, which offers alternatives to chemical pest management was conceptualized and directed by the Newfoundland Department of Environment and Labour, and will be promoted throughout the region after the launch.

The minister will also highlight the major activities of Environment Week. These include the provincial Environmental Awards Programme, in which approximately 60 groups, individuals, business and schools from all over the island and Labrador, have entered their projects in the seven-year-old competition. The winners will be announced during the week at the awards ceremony.
