In the case of documents received or approved, copies can be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item.

COMPONENT STUDY APPROVED

  • Star Lake Hydroelectric Development
    Proponent: Abitibi - Price Inc.

The wildlife component study has been approved for the undertaking.

NEW UNDERTAKING REGISTERED

  • Moose Pond Diversion Dyke (Pitman's Pond Hydro Dev.)
Proponent: Newfoundland Light & Power Co. Ltd.

The proponent proposes to construct a diversion dyke at Moose Pond, near Winterton, to ensure that all of the runoff in the Crooked Pond diversion flows into the Pitman's Pond watershed. This diversion was affected during original construction of the development in 1959, however at some point since, an alternate stream developed at Moose Pond which allows water to be lost to the system. The dyke will be less than two metres high, 10-15 metres in crest length, and will be a combined earth/timber crib structure. The proponent has indicated that construction is scheduled to start as soon as possible.

The public is invited to examine this registration document and offer written comments to the minister on whether an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) should be ordered for this proposal. The deadline for the receipt of public comments is June 9, 1996.

NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED

The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertaking which has recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
