Nominations sought for Provincial Environmental Awards

The nomination process for the 1996 Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards has started and organizers are asking the public to participate. "We promote the awards programme through a direct mail-out to community groups, schools and other associations," said Deris Hollett, president of the Women's Institutes which organizes the programme. "But we also know that there are still many more groups and individuals in the province who should be given the opportunity to nominate or to be nominated and we want to give them every opportunity to do just that."

Sponsored by the Department of Environment and Labour since their inception in 1990, the awards recognize the efforts of citizens of the province to raise environmental awareness. Nominations are sought in the categories of individual, citizens' group or organization, education, youth, business, and municipal. Nominees are also eligible for an honourable mention.

"It is important that the efforts of the citizens of this province are acknowledged and publicized. We all play a role as protectors of the environment, but it is important to recognize the leadership of individuals who set an example for the rest of us," said Ms. Hollett. "In the past, awards have been given for cleaning up illegal dump sites, removing car wrecks, environmental education, organizing recycling efforts and other environmental programs. Nominations reflect a wide variety of activities and any project that contributes to the preservation, protection and restoration of our environment is eligible," she said. Nominations will be accepted until May 22, 1996.
