Day of Mourning to remember workers who have died or been injured in the workplace

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Environment and Labour, announced today that Sunday, April 28, will be observed by the province as a "Day of Mourning" to remember individuals who have died or been injured or afflicted with an industrial disease while in the workplace. The minister said this event, which was introduced by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1986 and is promoted by district labour councils throughout the province, "reminds us to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives or suffered a work related injury or illness." He said: "It is a disturbing thought, that any one of us could go to work and not return home at the day's end. We must also, at this time, remember the families of victims of workplace accidents and illnesses."

The minister along with labour leaders and other officials will take part in the commemorative ceremony which will take place at 2 p.m., April 28 at the Ocean Ranger Memorial on the grounds of the Confederation Building. The minister said: "While this is a solemn event that commemorates those who have lost their lives or have been injured or afflicted with industrial disease, there is another very important message to be derived from the event: We must learn from these tragic experiences that injuries and illnesses in the workplace can be prevented and it is up to all of us to work together in reducing and eliminating workplace injury and illness."
