Government files notice of appeal with Supreme Court

Kevin Aylward, Minister responsible for the Human Rights Code, advises that government has filed a notice of appeal with the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal with respect to the decision of Mr. Justice Barry on August 23, 1995 in which he ordered that sexual orientation be read into the Human Rights Code.

Government has decided to appeal the decision as it believes that the suggested amendment on sexual orientation to the Human Rights Code is a matter that is more appropriately addressed by the House of Assembly rather than the courts. The minister stated that this matter will be further examined with a view to introducing appropriate amendments to the Human Rights Code.
