Environment and Labour Minister Kevin Aylward has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies can be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED

Three Brooks Gravel Quarry
Proponent: Penney Paving

The proponent proposes to extract and crush gravel for use in the upgrading and paving of a 16 kilometre portion of Route 360 (Bay d'Espoir Highway). The gravel pit will be accessible by a forest access road and will be located 70m from Three Brooks, west of the Bay d'Espoir Highway. The proponent proposes to employ approximately seven people in this operation. Construction is planned to start as soon as possible. Beaver Brook Antimony Mine and Mill

Proponent: Roycefield Resources Ltd.

The proponent proposes to develop an antimony mine and mill at its Beaver Brook property in central Newfoundland, 43 kilometres southwest of Glenwood. Roycefield Resources Ltd. proposes that the mine will be an underground operation with an initial mill capacity of 500 tonnes per day. The ore will be milled on-site using a flotation procedure. It is proposed that the undertaking will employ approximately 100 -125 persons during the operation phase. The operation is proposed to commence in the spring of 1996.

Thorburn Road Executive Golf Course
Proponent: Diana Investments Limited

The proponent proposes to construct an 18 hole executive golf course on the outskirts of St. John's, on Thorburn Road including a clubhouse, parking lot, irrigation pump house, maintenance building and storage shed. The entire area comprises approximately 75 hectares. The proponent indicated that 10 -15 seasonal jobs will be created by this operation and construction is proposed to begin in July 1997.

The public is invited to examine these registration documents and offer written comments to the minister on whether an environmental impact statement should be ordered for these proposals. The deadline for the receipt of public comments is May 17, 1996.

NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED

The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertaking which has recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
