Minister recognizes safety accomplishment at Hibernia site

Tom Murphy, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, today recognized the workers in the Topsides production facilities for Hibernia for their efforts in working 500,000 person hours without a lost time accident. This equates to 90 days of work without a lost time accident for approximately 1,100 employees.

Mr. Murphy commended the employees for their commitment to safety during a function at the Bull Arm site earlier today.

"This is an accomplishment for the workers at the Topsides construction site," said the minister, "because work here is fast paced and the potential for injury is higher than in other occupations. You have shown a demonstrated commitment to safety and I encourage you to continue to pay the utmost attention to safety matters, especially so in environments of this nature."

The minister presented both HMDC and PASSB, the Topsides hook-up contractor, with certificates recognizing their achievement in safety excellence. "Your contribution to workplace safety has resulted in an overall reduction of lost time accidents and has created a safer environment for all workers," said the minister. "I am encouraged by your commitment to safety and optimistic that we will see a continued reduction in lost time accidents at the Topsides production site."

To the end of December 1995, more than 5,300 people were working on the Hibernia project, with more than 4,800 people working at Bull Arm.
