The following is being distributed at the request of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer: Provisions surrounding campaign advertising during 1996 General Election The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer would like to remind all media of the legislative provisions surrounding campaign advertising during the 1996 General Election: Section 306 of the Elections Act, 1991 provides that campaign advertising through broadcast and print is limited to a prescribed 21 day period between the issue of the Writ and the day before polling day. For the purpose of the General Election to be held on Thursday, February 22, 1996, the permissible 21 day period will run from Wednesday, January 31 to Tuesday, February 20, both days inclusive. There are no restrictions to advertising through the use of outdoor advertising facilities. eg. billboards, lawn signs, posters, etc. anytime throughout the campaign period. Campaign advertising on the day before or day of polling on a
broadcast undertaking or in a newspaper, magazine or other
periodical publication by parties or candidates, or anyone on
their behalf, is not permitted except for messages of an
administrative nature provided such advertisements and
announcements take the following format:
