Minister Announces Details of Public Consultation Process on Educational Reform

Education Minister, Roger Grimes, today announced locations and dates for the public consultation process on educational reform and the release of a consultation document.

Mr. Grimes says government committed during the last election campaign to extensive public consultation before the new schools legislation is developed. "It is crucial that parents and students have an opportunity to express their views on the education system of the future," said Mr. Grimes. "We want to hear what they have to say on issues such as: the designation of schools as uni-denominational or inter-denominational, school viability, and transportation, just to mention a few."

The Consultation document, Structuring the Education System - A Public Consultation Paper for Educational change in Newfoundland and Labrador, will be released to the general public over the next week and will be available at the meeting locations.

Structuring the Education System will also be available on the Internet tomorrow through the provincial government's home page. The Internet address is:

Officials will closely monitor the Internet site for suggestions and comments during the process.

The education minister will host public meetings in 16 locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador beginning September 16 in Western Newfoundland and ending October 17 in Labrador. "It is our intention to carefully consider the views of the people in the preparation of new legislation governing education to be introduced in the legislature this fall," said Grimes.

People can participate in the public consultation process by either scheduling an appearance, by contacting the Department of Education or registering at the meeting sites between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the day of the consultation.

Consultation sessions will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at approximately 10 p.m.
