Erin Maureen Noel Awarded 1996 Pearson
Scholarship Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific is one of nine United World Colleges situated around the world. The United World Colleges are dedicated to the promotion of international understanding by creating an environment in which students from many countries and cultures are brought together to study and to serve the community. Students graduate with the world-respected International Baccalaureate, which largely replaces the 12th grade and university freshman year throughout North America. Nelson Mandella, President of South Africa, serves as President of the International Council of United World Colleges, with head office in London, England; and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan serves as President of United World Colleges. This year's winner is one of about 200 Pearson Scholarship winners chosen on a competitive basis from more than 75 countries around the world. Erin won the scholarship on the basis of her high academic achievement and the qualities of character made evident in a detailed application form and a personal interview. A selection committee composed of representatives from the Department of Education, the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association, Memorial University, and the school districts screened the applications, carried out the interviews, and determined the winner of the scholarship. The minister noted that the 1994 winner, Tracey Wentzell of Holy Cross High School, Daniel's Harbour, graduates from the college this spring with the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Our second year representative, Gerard March of Brother Rice High School, St. John's, will be returning to Pearson College in the fall for his second and final year.
