Ministerial statement - Minister congratulates recipients of Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics

Today I am pleased to inform the House that five of our outstanding teachers were recently presented with the prestigious Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics.

The awards recognize elementary and secondary school teachers who have had a major, proven impact on student performance and interest in science, technology and mathematics.

The winners are: Brenda Stamp, Gonzaga Regional High School; Cyril O'Reilly, St. Edward's Elementary, Placentia; Ruth Mercer, Ascension Collegiate; David Keefe, Menihek Integrated High School, Labrador City; and Allan Neil, Bishops College.

These are very challenging times in education and in our province, and we often overlook the many positive things that are taking place. On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Department of Education, I congratulate the five winners of the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics. With the continued contributions of these and other dedicated teachers, our students will be equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead in the next century.
