Hibernia helps provincial design technology students

The Hibernia Management and Development Company (HMDC) is working with the Department of Education and Training to provide design technology students in Newfoundland and Labrador with leading edge equipment used to design Hibernia's gravity base structure (GBS).

Over the past two years, as HMDC's design reaches completion and the company makes the transition to production, a number of surplus computers and drafting tables have been given to schools in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Since 1994, the company has donated 58 drafting tables and more than 100 computers which were distributed for use by students in Design Technology 1109 and 2109, in a program facilitated by the Learning Resources Distribution Centre of the Department of Education and Training and the school board offices.

"It was an excellent opportunity for the students and for us," says Hibernia's president Ken Hull. "Not only did they receive some expensive technology to facilitate their learning, but we are able to assist in the education of the young Newfoundlanders who represent the future for our province."

"Design Technology 1109 and 2109 are an integral component of a new technology education program being implemented at the senior high school level," says Education and Training Minister Chris Decker. "Students are introduced to the design process and appropriate design technologies including Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) systems.

"The department congratulates the Hibernia Management and Development Company for enhancing the learning environment in the area of design technology."
