Dorset excavation gets financial support

The South West Coast Development Association has successfully partnered with Memorial University in developing the Dorset Eskimo archaeological site at Cape Ray. Funding of $57,710 is being provided to the development association under the Canada/Newfoundland Strategic Regional Diversification COOPERATION Agreement.

Today's announcement was made in Port aux Basques by Roger Simmons, MP - Burin-St.George's on behalf of Lawrence MacAulay, Secretary of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (Veterans Affairs), and Judy Foote, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal for Newfoundland and Labrador. Both Mr. Simmons and Ms. Foote were attending a signing ceremony to officially launch the South Western Marine and Mountain Zone Corporation.

"We are known across the country and around the world for our rich culture and heritage. It is appropriate that we take advantage of the economic benefits the past offers to the development of our future," said Mr. Simmons. "As its proponent, the South West Coast Development Association will oversee this project, but the association will work closely with Memorial University and the tourism industry stakeholders in the area to maximize the benefits this initiative can contribute to the economy. Hopefully, this is only the first of many successful partnerships with the new regional development structure."

"This initiative reflects the role the tourism industry will play in community economic development throughout the province," said Ms. Foote. "The excavation of a Dorset Eskimo site in Cape Ray is an exciting opportunity for the region. Not only will it open doors to the history of the area, but it has significant tourism potential that will enhance the economic potential of the region. The new approach to regional economic development is about innovative partnerships and the South West Coast Development Association has been aggressive in its pursuit of this opportunity," continued Ms. Foote. "Initiatives such as these which offer long-term development potential will continue to attract government support and serve as an integral part of our future development."

The Canada/Newfoundland Strategic Regional Diversification COOPERATION Agreement is cost-shared between the federal and provincial governments and is administered federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and provincially by the Department of Development and Rural Renewal.
